What sparked the creation of these "DIY" fixtures?
We had seen many different people, in restaurants and stores, use the cheap hardware-store Y-splitter to build their own fixtures. These are depression cost, catechumen one seedling socket to many, and add together a fun aesthetic to a space. Nosotros idea it was such a playful thought, only it could exist much nicer if only the pieces had more than design qualities and were purpose-built.
How did you come with the idea?
While nosotros started to redesign the hardware store y-splitter, nosotros kept the basic idea, but had some new intentions. Some of the blueprint considerations included the bulb size, using all 60W bulbs accumulatea too much heat, so we reduced down to pocket-sized, candelabrum sizes. Nosotros fabricated them slender to increment the book of the chandelier, while also making it more than delicate. And certainly the interaction of building your ain, we have prototyped and played with may versions focusing on how it feels to build a fixture.
Why a branch-style fixture?
The class was pre-supposed by the commonsensical Y splitter, simply building off these ideas for DIY lighting systems we hope to aggrandize form possibilities in the future.
How exercise both your backgrounds contribute to the collaboration?
Splyt is built-in out of the work of Jason Krugman Studio, and is his get-go consumer light production. Jason has been making custom LED and interactive lighting installations for eight years. Scott is a trained builder and product designer, focusing on physical interaction design. We've been working together for 2 years, on JKS studio projects and the leap to a consumer production was quite natural.
How soon practise you retrieve this volition get to market?
We are hoping for this holiday season 2015.
Practice you have a target cost?
We're hoping to keep a small fixture around $100, and a larger one nether $300. This may be around $10/pc and you would buy them by the number of pieces.
What are the biggest challenges in creating and marketing a piece similar this?
Scott is skilled at rapid prototyping and 3d press, and Jason brings the electrical experience. Together we've apace iterated through multiple versions to go far at what tin exist manufactured. Still, the step into mass production from rapid prototypes is still quite a bound for a 2 person squad. We're working with different manufactures effectually the globe to endeavour to go to market for the holiday flavour.
